Bus Over 24 Tonnes Arriving in Indonesian Car Market

buzJAKARTA— For the first time in history, the Indonesian car market in 2016 started to offer bus with weight category above 24 tonnes. GAIKINDO data indicate, in 2016 sales of buses over 24 tonnes reached 106 units. In the previous years, the bus domestic market bus much enlivened by category 5-10 tonnes and 10-24 tonnes.

According to categorisation imposed by GAIKINDO, there are three categories of buses in the Indonesian car. In addition to the above 24-tonne category, there are 5-10 ton category and 10-24 ton category. Bus sales by categories of 5-10 tonnes and 10-24 tonnes have been prevalent in Indonesian car market.

Like sales of other models and types of cars in Indonesia, bus market volume for all three categories is also volatile. From 2009 to 2016, the largest bus sales volume occurred in 2012 (4,472 units). With such a volatile market, bus sales in the Indonesian car market reached 3,777 units with an upward trend compared to sales in 2015 (3,743 units).

The increasing trend of sales of buses as well as the creation of a new segment of buses weighing over 24 tonnes in the Indonesian car market is in accordance with the observation of Minister of Transportation Mr Budi Karya Sumadi mentioning that today the bus has become a way of life for the people of Indonesia. More so with the regulations of a number of local governments to build infrastructure for the public in using buses.

The Minister said this during a meeting with a group of Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) in Jakarta. The meeting discussed the strategic function of the new terminal Pulo Gebang (Cakung, East Jakarta) built by Jakarta Provincial Government.

According to the Minister, the bus as public transport has more value. Bus can deliver passengers to the point even further, especially in its role in supporting the integrated transport with other modes such as rail (station), boats (port), and the airplane (airports).

In Indonesia, there are some brands of buses and minibuses for public transport. They are, among others Hino, Mitsubishi Fuso, Mercedes-Benz, Isuzu, Nissan Diesel, Suzuki, Daihatsu, Kia, Hyundai, Volvo, Scania, Toyota, Tata. Buses are built by a body of a car, among others Adi Putro, Like New Fleet, as well as its own brand holders. (*)
