KONTAN— The Indonesia’s domestic automotive industry grew positively at the beginning of the second quarter of 2025. Based on the latest data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), the whole sales in April 2025 reached 51,205 units. This figure increased by five percent compared to the same period last year (year-on-year, yoy) which recorded 48,764 units.
However, retail sales weakened. In April 2025, retail sales were 57,031 units, down 3.2 percent compared to April 2024 which reached 58,890 units. A sharper decline occurred when calculated on a monthly basis (month-to-month, mtm). Whole sales in April 2025 fell 27.8 percent compared to March 2025 which recorded 70,895 units. Monthly retail fell 25.5 percent from 76,582 units in March to 57,031 units in April.
Cumulatively, the sales trend during the first four months of this year weakened. Total whole sales in the January-April 2025 period reached 256,368 units, or down 2.9 percent compared to the same period the previous year which recorded 264,014 units. Meanwhile, retail sales throughout January-April 2025 fell 7.7 percent to 267,514 units compared to 289,917 units in the same period last year.
Amid market dynamics, Toyota became the best-selling car brand based on retail data in April 2025, with sales reaching 18,619 units. Followed by Daihatsu with 9,801 units and Honda in third place with 4,539 units. The increase in whole sales in April is a breath of fresh air for the national automotive industry. Market players still need to be aware of the downward trend in retail sales and the fairly sharp fluctuations in monthly sales. (*)
