Up Seven Percent, Whole Sales Reach 66,447 Units in January 2026

JAKARTA— Whole sales of cars showed signs of recovery in early 2026. Data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) shows that whole sales in January 2026 reached 66,447 units, a seven percent year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to 62,084 units in January 2025. Meanwhile, retail sales reached 66,936 units in the same period, a 4.5 percent increase compared to 64,076 units in January 2025.

GAIKINDO Chairman Jongkie Sugiarto expressed optimism that car sales throughout 2026 would achieve the set target of 850,000 units. “Even if possible, more. That’s our hope. We’re always optimistic, but also realistic,” said Jongkie, Monday 9 February 2026.

However, in terms of month-to-month (MtM) whole sale sales in January 2026 fell 29.4 percent compared to December 2025 with 94,100 units. Monthly retail sales also fell 28.7 percent compared to 93,833 units in December 2025.

According to Jongkie, the reason for the surge in car sales in the final month of 2025 was because authorized dealers (APMs) offered significant discounts, attracting consumer interest. Furthermore, he noted that the discontinuation of several incentives, including the duty-free import of completely built-up (CBU) electric vehicles, contributed to the increase in sales in December 2025.

The automotive industry will still face several challenges this year, particularly in terms of economic growth and the stability of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar. “There are still many challenges; from economic growth, exchange rates, and interest rates. These are things we can’t simply ignore. All of these things are related to sales,” he said. (BUSINESS)
