Electric Car Sales in Indonesia Improving, BYD Achieves Threefold Increase since 2023

JAKARTA— Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Indonesia are accelerating. BYD revealed data on the growth of the electric car market in the country in early 2026. PT BYD Indonesia President Director Eagle Zhao stated that electric cars are no longer a rarity or merely a high-end hobby, but have become a mainstream trend.

“The development of electric mobility in Indonesia is no longer a niche (limited segment), but has become part of the transformation of the mainstream automotive industry,” said Eagle Zhao in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 9, 2026.

Electric car sales have surpassed 25 percent in the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) areas. Nationally, the EV market has reached 15 percent. This figure is a sevenfold increase compared to 2023. This is a very rapid increase, occurring in just three years.

“This means that for every four new vehicles sold, one is an electric car,” said Zhao.

According to data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), EV sales are increasing, with a breakdown of 10,327 units in 2022, 17,051 units in 2023, 43,188 units in 2024, and 103,931 units in 2025. For BYD, this success is due to its aggressive approach to providing mobility solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also price-competitive. This is complemented by the increasingly widespread availability of charging infrastructure and government policies.

BYD Indonesia continues to play a crucial role in accelerating the transition to cleaner and more advanced mobility solutions, with more than 10,000 units sold between January and February 2026. “These results further strengthen BYD’s role as a key driver of EV adoption in Indonesia, representing a threefold increase compared to the same period last year,” said Zhao.
