JAKARTA, 05/02/2026— The Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) is requesting assurance of long-term commitment to several new car brands entering the Indonesian automotive market. GAIKINDO Secretary General Kukuh Kumara stated that the number of members of the association is growing. This can be seen in the arrival of new brands, including electric vehicles (EVs).
“GAIKINDO’s membership, previously around 30, has now increased to 62 companies. The number of electric vehicle products on display is also increasing,” Kukuh said at the EVolution Indonesia Forum 2026 on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
GAIKINDO praised several new authorized brand agents (APMs) who have committed to investing in building assembly facilities in Indonesia. For example, Chinese EV manufacturer BYD will open its factory in Subang (West Java) in the first quarter of 2026. With an investment of IDR 11.2 trillion, the BYD factory is prepared to have a production capacity of up to 150,000 units per year.
Furthermore, Vietnamese car manufacturer VinFast has invested more than US$300 million with an initial production capacity of around 50,000 vehicles per year. The Vinfast Subang manufacturing facility is built on 171 hectares of land. VinFast also reaffirmed its commitment to gradually increase its investment in Indonesia until it reaches US$1 billion (Rp16 trillion). In this phase, production capacity is targeted to reach 350,000 vehicles per year to serve the domestic market while also opening up export opportunities.
Several other new brands entering the Indonesian market from China include Changan, iCar, Lepas, Geely, XPeng, Jaecoo, and Jetour. Several of these APMs have begun local assembly through facilities owned by PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM).
Kukuh emphasized that these new brands need to have the commitment and capability to survive long-term in the Indonesian automotive market. “The automotive industry is a long-term industry; it can’t be hit and run. So, they must have the ability to survive long-term and grow alongside the Indonesian people,” he said. (BISNIS)
