JAKARTA— The Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) stated that the national automotive industry is capable of producing several types of vehicles, including commercial pickup trucks. This production capability has been in place since 1969.

Pickup truck production in Indonesia is carried out by several GAIKINDO member automotive manufacturing companies. These include PT Suzuki Indomobil Motor, PT Isuzu Astra Motor Indonesia, PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motor, PT SGMW Motor Indonesia (Wuling Motors), PT Sokonindo Automobile (DFSK), PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), and PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM).

Together with its member APMs, GAIKINDO continues to study developments in the Indonesian automotive industry. Production development is carried out to adapt to the needs of the Indonesian people, including the public demand for commercial pickup trucks.

Over time, these commercial pickup trucks have become a platform for producing multipurpose vehicles (MPVs). The conversion of pick-ups into MPVs was carried out through collaboration with various body builders. Production was then further developed by several APMs. As a result, various MPV models are now fully manufactured in Indonesia.

Several MPVs are currently highly popular and a primary choice for public mobility. Some have even been exported to Southeast Asia. At the same time, APMs of GAIKINDO member car manufacturers continue to develop commercial pickup trucks. The goal is to meet various domestic business activities.

From this, GAIKINDO believes the Indonesian automotive industry should be given the opportunity to meet all domestic demand. “The Indonesian automotive industry has the know-how to manufacture appropriate vehicle types. Furthermore, we also have the capability and capacity to accommodate all domestic commercial vehicle needs,” said Anton Kumonty (GAIKINDO Daily Chairperson) on Friday, February 27, 2026.

GAIKINDO currently has 61 members from automotive companies. Some of these APMs produce mid-to-low-end cars or pickup trucks. Overall, GAIKINDO members have a production capacity of over 400,000 units per year for pickup trucks. This number is believed to be sufficient to meet domestic demand and needs.

If all of this domestic demand were met by the Indonesian automotive industry, it would have a tremendous impact, not only on GAIKINDO members, but also on the entire national automotive industry ecosystem from upstream to downstream. Simply put, a single car consists of over 20,000 components. Furthermore, it involves a wide variety of raw materials, including steel, glass, rubber, plastic, fabric, and more. These various components are manufactured and assembled by thousands of domestic component manufacturers, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and employ millions of Indonesian workers.

Anton added that the Indonesian automotive industry—including GAIKINDO and the Association of Automotive and Motorcycle Equipment Industries (GIAMM)—is requesting the government to provide opportunities to meet the demand for these commercial vehicles. It is hoped that this step will optimize available domestic production capacity and ensure the continued engagement of the workforce, which currently comprises approximately 1.5 million workers across the industry’s backward and forward linkage chains.
