JAKARTA— Sales of PHEVs in January 2026 were still dominated by Chinese brands. This segment grew compared to January 2025.
Year-to-year (YoY) data shows remarkable growth in the PHEV segment in Indonesia. In January 2026, 502 PHEVs were sold, an increase of almost 3,037 percent compared to the same period in 2025 (January 2025), when 16 units were sold.
However, on a month-to-month (MtM) basis in January 2026, the PHEV market actually declined sharply. In December 2025, PHEV sales reached 1,051 units, representing a decrease of approximately 52 percent compared to January 2026. This is likely due to the annual cycle of the automotive industry.
Compared to other electric car models, PHEV sales are still relatively small. Electric cars accounted for 10,211 units, and hybrids for 4,195 units. Of the total electric car market—a combination of BEVs, HEVs, and PHEVs—which reached 14,908 units in January 2026, PHEVs only contributed around 3.3 percent.
PHEVs are starting to find their niche through brands like Chery and Geely. This segment fills a niche for consumers who want the thrill of a rechargeable electric car but still want the safety of a gasoline engine for long-distance travel.
Chery, with its Tiggo 8 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid), has emerged as a dominant force, capturing nearly half of the PHEV market in January 2026. 240 units of this SUV were sold. Other Chinese brands such as Geely, Jaecoo, and Wuling are also beginning to make inroads in this segment. (DETIK)
