“Sympathetic” Traffic Operation to Provide Education and Therapy

1JAKARTA— Indonesian National Police (Polri) conducted a nationwide traffic operation almost throughout March 2017. Entitled “Sympathetic Operation 2017”, the event took place for 21 days starting from 1 March 2017.

In general, the police implemented the operation more as a means to sensitize road users on the importance of road safety. But against drivers who were caught violating traffic regulations and the potential to trigger an accident, the police would apply firm approach with maximum fines.

Deputy Director of Traffic Polda Metro Jaya, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Superintendent) Mr Indra Jafar said police prioritised persuasion in public in this operation. Police would only act firmly against potential violations of traffic accidents. “We produced the blue ticket,” said Mr Indra told reporters at the Jakarta Police Headquarters, Jakarta.

The blue ticket means that the police handle the cases of traffic violations by implementing E-ticket system (online ticket), which recently forced. The E-ticket forces drivers who violate traffic regulations to resolve the case by paying a fine through ATM transfer or cash in the bank and not at the scene. The police applies the E-ticket to prevent the roadside negotiation between police officers and drivers. “This is for transparency and accountability, so no negotiation,” said Mr Indra Jafar.

Earlier, Deputy Head of City Police Brig Suntana said that the operation emphasised on educational, pre-emptive and preventive. The goal is to improve discipline in the pass-traffic community.

“We appealed to the public to understand what they are doing. There are stages, maybe the first week, second, third, and in the last week will be dealt firmly,” he said.

During the operation, the Jakarta MetroPolice was in collaboration with the Department of Transportation and the military. The operation targets included traffic offenders that can lead to accidents, for example the motorists against the flow and violation of traffic signs. (*)
