JAKARTA— Several industry entities, one of which is the Association of Automotive and Motorcycle Equipment Industries (GIAMM), have raised objections to the planned import of approximately 105,000 units of CBU pickup trucks. GIAMM has highlighted the potential harm to the domestic component industry by importing pickup trucks.
These Mahindra and Tata Motors pickup trucks from India will be used by PT Agrinas Palma Nusantara for transportation in rural areas of Indonesia. “The impact is quite significant. The 105,000 units are equivalent to half of Indonesia’s annual commercial vehicle sales,” said Rachmat Basuki, Secretary General of GIAMM, on Friday, 20 February 2026.
Total pickup sales in Indonesia throughout 2025 reached 107,008 units. This figure is close to the number imported from Mahindra and Tata Motors. This means, Rachmat said, the components industry is losing its normal supply to every pickup truck brand.
“One authorized brand agent (APM) typically has a supply chain of 300 companies, from tier one to tier three. Not to mention the small and medium-sized industries (IKM) and the car body industry involved,” Rachmat said.
The plan to import thousands of pickup trucks also has the potential of negative impact to economic growth and employment of components industry. “At the very least, you need to use domestic vehicles. No need to keep importing,” Rachmat said.
Previously, the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) also spoke out regarding pickup truck imports. Currently, Indonesia already has dozens of automotive companies producing pickup trucks. All vehicle manufacturers are capable of meeting domestic demand. “It will indeed take sufficient time to meet the required quantities and criteria,” said Putu Juli Ardika, Chairman of GAIKINDO, in an official statement.
Of the 61 members of GAIKINDO, seven offer a range of locally assembled 4×2 pickup trucks. The Domestic Component Level (TKDN) for all pickup trucks is 40 percent or higher. The seven pickup manufacturers include Suzuki, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Wuling, DFSK, Toyota, and Daihatsu. (KATADATA)
